Chuck Knows Dogs. And He’s Been at It a Long Time.

Chuck Prowler started Crabtree Retrievers & Kennels more than a decade ago on his family’s mountain farm outside Waynesville. His focus has always been retrievers, specifically the serious field work that turns a good dog into a reliable hunting partner. He trains for AKC and UKC hunt test titles and works with dogs at every level, from first-year pups through seasoned Junior and Senior Hunt Test competitors.

But he’s not just a retriever guy. Plenty of his clients come in with everyday obedience problems, teenage dogs that need structure, or puppies that need a strong start. He handles all of it.

He’s also active with Chesapeake Bay Retriever Relief & Rescue (CBRR&R), which tells you something about where his priorities sit.

  • AKC and UKC Hunt Test preparation and titles
  • Retriever field training, from puppy through Senior level
  • Obedience, board & train, and puppy foundation programs
  • Active member, Chesapeake Bay Retriever Relief & Rescue (CBRR&R)
  • Over a decade working with dogs in Western North Carolina

100+ Acres. All of It Theirs.

The land is completely undeveloped mountain terrain. No subdivisions, no traffic, no leash laws. Just trails, fields, and a spring-fed pond that boarding dogs love as much as the hunt dogs do.

The Pond

Spring-fed, supervised, and a genuine highlight for most dogs that visit. This is not a decorative feature.

Trail Runs, Field Walks, and Room to Move

Every boarding dog gets out on the land every day. That means actual trail runs and field walks through mountain terrain, not a quick lap around a concrete exercise yard.

For working retrievers and gun dogs in training, the property doubles as a serious training environment. Water work, land marks, and field patterns, all on-site. The drives down from Asheville or up from Sylva come with a payoff when you see what the dogs get to do here.

It’s also a ten-minute drive from Max Patch and a reasonable stop for folks heading to Hot Springs. If you’re planning a weekend in the mountains and can’t bring your dog, this is the place they go while you’re gone.

Clients come from across the region. If you’re within a reasonable drive of Asheville and need boarding, training, or hunt test prep, there’s a good chance this is worth the trip.
